How to play Chess Online

Bring your attention to one round of Chess Online. Checkmate the opposing king. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Play on one device with a friend or against the basic computer opponent. Repetition and the fifty-move rule trigger an automatic draw here; there is no internet matchmaking or tournament clock.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Checkmate the opposing king. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Select local play or basic computer.
  2. Choose a piece and a legal target.
  3. Castling, en passant and promotion obey king-safety rules.
  4. Use the promotion selector before moving to the last rank.
  5. Undo or New game restarts play.

Controls

Tap a piece and target; choose a promotion piece when needed. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

Castling cannot pass through an attacked square. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

The computer is a small search opponent, not a rated engine. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
