How to play Canfield Solitaire

Choose a round of Canfield Solitaire and settle into its rules. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
