How to play Futoshiki

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Futoshiki. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Look at what changes after your first action. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
