How to play Slitherlink

Open Slitherlink, check the instructions and begin a round. Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Look at what changes after your first action. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Ten 4×4 loop puzzles with all cell clues shown.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Click an edge to draw, exclude or clear it.
  2. Count the four edges around each cell.
  3. Do not branch or form separate loops.
  4. Check puzzle verifies every clue and loop connectivity.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A 0 cell has no loop edge around it; a 3 has exactly three. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

Several small loops are invalid even if clues match. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
